29.august: a tart? who, me?

Any food you can eat with your hands is great picnic food in my opinion. So, when I recently invited S. on a romantic picnic for two I went looking for recipes for us to indulge in. On my search I perused sites such as epicurious, food tv, jamie oliver, nigella lawson, martha stewart...I even went to other food bloggers such as Derrick and Jo. While there were many recipes that tempted both my palate and my picnic desire (such as Derrick's Caprese terrine and Jo's roast red pepper hummos) I just couldn't find the quintessential recipe.

Then it hit me...my binder stuffed full of recipes (it actually tumbled from the shelf when I went to pull out my Silver Palate "Special Occasions" cookbook). I remembered there were a plethora of recipes in there as I came to on my kitchen floor and began to flip through it. Chicken salad? No. Lettuce wraps? No. My mom's warm potato salad? Hmmm...yummy, but, no. Then, there it was. A savory tart. A savory tomato tart. A savory tomato tart with onions and goat's cheese. Oh my...I was woozy...perhaps from the bump on my head, but this was it. THE RECIPE.

Our picnic was lovely; we were actually rained out..or rained in, as it might be. I set up the living room floor with a few cushions and put the picnic blanket on the coffee table. We had San Pellegrino with orange-pineapple juice and drank it through straws from the bottles. I also made two really quite scrumptious Muffulleta sandwiches (the idea for which I had gotten both from a Cookworks show and from Jo's picnic series...a recipe I'm not going to include, because it really is simple and totally up to your own tastes. Ours were smoked turkey breast, avocado, frissee lettuce, basil, jalapeno havarti, hot peppers and a lovely concoction of mayonnaise mixed with my delicious home-made sun-dried tomato pesto! Ah, scrump-diddily-ishious!
