Breakfast Shakes

May 16, 2012 by jennifer

This really is “The Shake that Packs a Wallop” and is great for breakfast (or any meal, I would think). It is high in protein (from various sources), low in fat and ultra delicious. I think I finally came up with the ultimate breakfast shake recipe – and it only took me 30 years!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed or reduced sugar orange juice2 tablespoons skim milk powder½ cup fat-free yogurt with fruit (any flavour)2 tablespoons flax seed oil1 banana¼ cup silken tofu – flavoured if you prefer (I like almond!)½ cup fruit: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, plums, nectarines…

Directions:

1. Put ingredients into blender and add 1 ice cube. Blend until smooth and serve.

Makes 2 servings.

After-Thoughts:

You can do just about anything to give this shake the taste you want. You can use plain or vanilla yogurt instead of fruit, you can add honey if you use plain tofu for a bit of sweetness. Make it your own and enjoy!

Berry-Filled Sangria

May 16, 2012 by jennifer

This recipe changes every time it is made — depending on what wine is on hand and what fruit is available. In this one the strawberries were the best after about an hour of soaking time; the raspberries started to disintegrate and the blueberries didn’t absorb much alcohol… but did stay very tasty. You can also substitute almost any liquor for the vodka – rum, tequila, triple sec, cointreau, gin…

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup washed and hulled strawberries ½ cup washed blueberries½ cup washed raspberriesjuice of ½ lemon¼ bottle dry white wine¼ bottle dry champagne1 bottle rose zinfandel¼ cup fruit-infused vodka2 cups white cranberry juice1 ½ cups soda water

Directions:

Put ice cubes in bottom of pitcher, toss in fruit on top of ice along with lemon juice.

Add wine, champagne and vodka. Stir.

Retire to someplace comfortable with two glasses and a good friend. Drink the sangria and don’t forget to indulge in the quite inebriated fruit…especially as the evening progresses.

After-Thoughts:

This recipe can also be made with red wine; but that is better in the winter… it’s a bit heavier and better for cool weather indulgences.
