2006-05-08: for the love of ice cream
Most people have enjoyable childhood reminiscences that revolve around or somehow involve ice cream. Birthday parties, family vacations, road trips, slumber parties – all of these occasions are usually accented by ice cream in some way. I have mentioned one such memory before – and praised the specific brand of ice cream that was hugely elemental in that particular recollection.
To my family, ice cream is by no means a frivolous expenditure. My parents probably have – were I to venture a guess – at least four different flavours of ice cream in their freezer at this very moment. And those exist for a few different reasons. One: my mother forgets what is in her cupboards and her freezer when she goes shopping (when I lived there and went shopping with her I had to tell her not to buy a fifth package of potato flour or a third bag of oatmeal). Two: there are three boys living in that house (my father and two brothers), each of whom likes different flavours of ice cream for very different reasons. Three: (as previously stated) my family loves ice cream.
It’s not that I see anything wrong with keeping a variety of flavours in the freezer, and heck, if I had a huge freezer just dedicated to the storage of ice cream I would most likely have every flavour of Haagen-Dazs, Kawartha Dairy and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in there, just awaiting my ultimate craving. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) that is simply not possible. But treating myself to a nice pint of ice cream every once in a while is certainly not out of the question. But what kind, what flavour? Where do I personally turn when ice cream is really the only thing that will alleviate my longing?
Ben & Jerry’s: New York Super Fudge Chunk. That is my all-time top-of-the-list favourite ice cream. When S. knows I need to be taken care of and a foot rub just isn’t going to do the trick he comes home with a container of NYSFC. When I’m tired or just feeling as though things could go better for me I head out to the store and get a container of NYSFC. And…I have to say that eating it out of the container is not only allowed, in my house it is passionately encouraged.
In order to pass this wee tradition along to a fellow Canadian Blogger this is my recipe for the inaugural edition of Canadian Blogging-by-Post. I will be putting together a care-package this weekend for someone very lucky. Unfortunately it will not contain a pint of ice cream, but it will have the recipe and some other glorious goodies!
Be sure to check Sam's round-up of all the Canadian Blogging-by-Post entries...they are absolutely chocolicious!

| May 10, 2006: | Sam (http://www.sweetpleasure.blogspot.com/) Fantastic picture Jennifer. I haven't tried this flavour but, I'm going to go out and buy it. The last time you posted ice cream I went out and bought Kawartha's! Thanks. |
