2006-11-13: lentil - a story of love
Setting: A chilly kitchen in Eastern Toronto, Autumn 2006
In a time when the world of delectables belonged only to junk food, there lived a legume who dared to ask "why?"
Filled with a love of learning, Lentil has no choice after her father's death but to disguise herself as a male pancake so that she can pursue all her sweet-imagined possibilities. Her journey begins...
Lentil joins a group of other types of pancakes on their way to a dinner party in Toronto. There, "he" is taste-tested by the Domestic Goddess, who is impressed with Lentil's robust flavour. The Goddess admits "him" as a pancake - not knowing "he" is a female healthy version of the delicious but guilt-filled fried food.
Lentil's friend Garbonzo, takes Lentil with him to dinner at the home of his beautiful bride-to-be, Fava. There, everything goes perfectly until Lentil feels herself falling in love with Garbonzo. And then, when Fava's father breaks off her engagement to Garbonzo, Lentil is suddenly viewed as a prospective bridegroom. Lentil finds herself in an impossible situation - and yet nothing is ever impossible!
When Garbonzo comes to dinner, he sees Fava falling in love with Lentil, while Lentil only sees Garbonzo's love for Fava. Not wanting to confuse Fava or herself any longer, Lentil decides to end her masquerade. Lentil says good-bye to Fava - each of them wiser and better for having known one another. Lentil then reveals herself to Garbonzo. Though she is a legume ahead of her time, Garbonzo is a prisoner of his; having only become known for his part in hummus. So her journey must continue...to a place where she hears things are different.
The end...and a new beginning, as a delicious and healthy pancake.
