2007-02-19: delectable delights for my darling
Bananas have become a commodity in our house. Between my husband and my son bunches of them disappear every week. I feel as though I am buying gold when I sneak bouquets of them into my cart at the grocery every weekend. By mid-week I am coveting the knots of yellow at the market closest to us, surreptitiously purchasing more and more, just to keep my own stock up at home.
It could be that both of my boys need a daily potassium dose, or perhaps they both have high B vitamin requirements. My husband is always asking me to make desserts with bananas and, being The Domestic Goddess, I do try to appease him whenever possible.
This year Valentine's Day holds special sentiment for us, so I really wanted to make his evening memorable. It is our first V-Day as parents so it's pretty special in that way...putting the wee one to bed before dinner and snuggling on the couch amidst toys and bibs was oh-so-decadent. Another reason I wanted to make his V-Day memorable is that, S., my dear husband, is leaving us to go to Saudi Arabia for 6 weeks soon (for work) and we will be apart for the most consecutive days since the day we met almost exactly five years ago. (More snuggling on the couch and hand-holding followed dinner for this reason.)
What do you bake for the one you love? I sat and thought about this for a while and the only thought that floated through my mind immediately was "...chocolate...". S. loves chocolate and so from there the dessert was born. I flipped through books and magazines, websites and blogs, searching for the quintessential sweet recipe for my excessively sweet man. Finally I remembered a recipe I had printed out - probably three years ago - a cheesecake brownie that I figured would fit the bill. I found the recipe finally: Martha's Banana Split Brownie (and a hush descended upon the room).
They have it all, these toothsome confections: chocolate (the number one asked-for sweet in our house), cream cheese (another favourite in desserts) and bananas, which make my husband smile so much when he sees them in dessert.
If you are hankering for a delightful dessert for your darling dearest, be sure to check out Jasmine's round-up of edible sweet seductions - coming soon!
