2007-05-23: do blondes have more fun?
I had blonde hair from the age of 12 until the age of 16. Then I went red. Then at about age 24 I went blonde again and back to red and back to blonde and back to red. I have had hair in pretty much all shades of the rainbow since I first started to experiment with hair dye (including a hideous green (lasted a day), a gorgeous burgandy (lasted the better part of a year), totally uncharacteristic black (lasted a few months) and even a rather becoming shade I referred to as "Ronald McDonald Red" that stuck for a whole summer). But with which colour did I have the most fun...?
As a red head I feel my most natural. My mom has red hair and I have her skin and her eye colour so red suits me, I think. As a brunette I feel a little mousy but also a little like the sexy school librarian who only lets her hair down and takes off her glasses for someone special. As a blonde I feel very confident, a little more bubbly and as though I might turn a few heads...even if it is more to look at my cuter-that-ever son and not at my hair dye job.
I wonder if it is the same for desserts...? If brownies are simply seen as slightly-passed-their-prime sweets that most people aren't interested in at first glance and blondies are the stunners with the voluptuous, um...flavours that most are interested in because they are right there in front of you. I mean really, there is nowhere to hide flavours in a blondie - perhaps a few nuts but we won't get into that.
The stark whiteness (or off-whiteness) of these bars is both simple and beautiful. But, much like the white serving plates and dishware I keep in my kitchen they also tend to make everything else stand out to the eye. Serve them next to some really delectable raspberry coulis or some decadent hot bittersweet chocolate and they will gladly hand the applause over to the side dish. But serve them on their own and you will wow your guests (or yourself!) with how delcious they are. Not cloyingly sweet as you might expect with the white chocolate as the base, but rich and chewy and mouth-wateringly tasty as a good "brownie" should be.
Also, I have to "pick" a hair colour for myself soon - I'm going to be in a wedding party wearing a gorgeous rust-coloured dress in a few weeks and have no idea what colour my hair should be. If you have any suggestions, I'll happily take them!
For more white-inspired desserts please check out Tara's blog where she will post the round-up for SHF #31 - Tasting the Many Shades of White - on Friday!

| Jun 26, 2007: | Maya Oh my heavens! These are fantastic! I made these on the weekend and ended up having to give them away to friends otherwise I would have eaten them all. They are truly wonderful.I do hope you have plans to write a cookbook sometime soon. |
| Jun 10, 2007: | Linda K (www.sollinda.blogspot.com) Mmmmm....these were gooood! For fear of devouring the whole batch in one sitting, I took these into work the following morning and they were a bit hit. Excellent recipe. Tasty site! |
| Jun 6, 2007: | Ellen Please forgive my last comment... I read too hastily. And the blondies turned out divine! Everyone loved them. |
| Jun 5, 2007: | Ellen Although I don't think the recipe specifies, I (hopefully) assume that, after step 5, you mix together the white chocolate mixture and the flour mixture and then proceed. Right? Thanks! |
| May 30, 2007: | Patricia Scarpin (www.technicolorkitcheninenglish.blogspot.com) I've had all sorts of hair colors, too - green not included - but for a while now I've been keeping my light brown mane and I'm ok with that.I'd love to be a redhead, I have freckles and all but I just got lazy of coloring my hair every month. So my vote goes for red. :) These blondies look delicious and so does your blog! |
| May 27, 2007: | Jennifer (http://www.domesticgoddess.ca) SHF is always announced on the blog hosting it, usually at least three weeks before the deadline. This month it will be announced this week - on MY blog, right here! Yep, I'm hosting, lucky me!And if you're looking for the latest on SHF you can always click on the icon on my main page, "this month's SUGAR HIGH" or below it for a link to a list of past SHF themes and hosts. |
| May 27, 2007: | MidwestMaven Where can I find details about next month's Sugar High Friday and theme? I'm a newcomer to blogging, but I want to check it out! Thanks! |
| May 26, 2007: | Ahona (www.thebigmama.blogspot.com) They look beautiful! I love blondies, but brownies are more my thing honestly. As for the hair, try brown with burgundy highlights! |
| May 26, 2007: | Tatyana Don't do your hair for single dress or occasion -- make it more versatile! I would say go with dark color, but do a few ginger highlights. Then every time you move, your hair will catch light and slightly change its color emphasizing the perfect match with the dress (one or another!) :-) |
| May 23, 2007: | Mary (www.ceresandbacchus.com) Blondies are awesome indeed, for dessert. For the hair? Try for a red that would look with the dress. Take a swatch in with you to the hairdresser. |
| May 23, 2007: | Jennifer (http://www.domesticgoddess.ca) Right now my hair is dullsville faded orange-brown. I haven't dyed it in months (ack!) |
| May 23, 2007: | Tara (www.sevenspoons.net) Gorgeous! I've only just taken to blondies (as my love affair with chocolate is long and passionate), but these look absolutely divine. Brava!Hmm. And now for girlier pursuits, a hair colour. That's tough! Maybe a more auburn shade of red? What colour are you now? |
