2007-06-01: the sweetest thing...
I've been thinking a lot about cravings lately. Being laid up in a hospital bed with not much to do other than stare out a window for hours at a time will do that to a person. Last night I had a lot of trouble sleeping and I lay here in my bed, counting desserts rather than sheep. I counted mini cheesecakes, creme brulee, blueberry muffins, apple pie, ice cream sundaes and even coffee granita. I mused over recipes I have in the back of my mind for layers of crumby, sinful chocolate cakes, tired fluffy whipped cream-covered confections and fruit-topped flans.
When I finally did fall asleep I dreampt of having coffee with Willie Wonka and The Sugar Plum Fairy. We sat and ate chocolates and tea cakes and little pieces of candied fruit from crystal bowls. I must have had a smile on my face all night long.
As my blood sugar surely began to rise and my fingers and toes began to twitch, I desperately tried to narrow it all down to one. A single solitary dessert - were I allowed (and able!) to bake or cook anything in the whole world, with any and all exotic ingredients and that took any amount of time and effort. What would it be that I would crave right now..? It was really difficult to narrow it down - there are so many sweet things I could happily munch away on right now that choosing one is like choosing your favourite child (luckily I don't have that problem!).
So, I ask you. What is your favourite, most craved dessert? What do you want when you are on a diet or when you've been away from home for a long time? What dessert always catches your eye on a menu in a restaurant and you've had it made by a thousand different people but never made it yourself? I want to know. I want you to make it for SHF this month and post about it on June 25th and I will post the round-up on Friday June 29th.
I know I said I was going to do an all-Canadian Extravaganza for SHF this month but with my extenuating circumstances I thought this might be a better idea. Help me curb my cravings! And hopefully I'll be resting at home by the time you are all posting about your favourite desserts.

| Jun 25, 2007: | MeltingWok (http://www.meltingwok.com) Hi Jennifer,Hope you're feeling better. It was so hot here in Southern California, and the only thing I craved for is something cooling. I ran out of my Secret deodorant, powdered myself like a freaking geisha, brought out the standing fan and made Coconut, Rose and Pandan Agar Agar Jell-O. Hehe..enjoy !:) Anyway, I've also submitted this to SHF through your email :) |
| Jun 24, 2007: | Windy (http://www.windyscorner.info) My favourite sweet... it got to be muffins, esp. chco chips one! Having say that, I made some berries pies recently and they tasted really good. But I guess I would be too late to join the SHF by the time I post it thou... :( |

| Jun 21, 2007: | Jennifer (http://www.domesticgoddess.ca) Anything that falls under "sweet cravings" works with me! Enjoy! Indulge! Fill that craving and satisfy that sweet tooth! |
| Jun 19, 2007: | kellypea (http://sassandveracity.typepad.com) This is tough -- something you love that you've tasted a thousand others make, but haven't made yourself? I know right now that there isn't anything that fits that description -- So maybe it's a craving for something that sounds amazing and I haven't made it before...Will that work? |
| Jun 16, 2007: | Jennifer (http://www.domesticgoddess.ca) Of course! Enjoy! |
| Jun 16, 2007: | MissK (mychampagnedreams.blogspot.com) Hi,I've been visiting food blogs for over a year now and have always enjoyed Sugar High Friday,i'm thinking of participating in this next one,is it ok to enter even though my site is not exclusively a food blog? |
| Jun 15, 2007: | Rachael I just had to comment on your website. Thanks for letting me know about it. I can narrow my answer down to 3 very simple and delicious recipes: 1) Victorian sponge cake - this is a standard from my English background. My grandma in England always had one on the go in her kitchen. I have to say that Nigella's recipe is the best one I have found yet.2) Mexican cheescake flan (sooo easy). 3) Chocolate hazlenut torte. |
| Jun 15, 2007: | Tracey I find it ironic that I am now providing you with suggestions about food, as I have drooled over your entries ever since your brother sent me the link to your website. I want you to know that I have often peeked at your entries when I am too busy to cook, so I can at least think about yummy food while I dine on a pathetic meal of popcorn....But back to the matter at hand. It is hard to narrow it down to one. I have favourites from everywhere I have lived. From Tunisia, hands down, a luscious chocolate charlotte, filled with 3 kinds of chocolate mousse and topped with a layer of chocolate ganache. From Mexico, flan flavoured with cinnamon, tres leches cake, or anything with cajeta. Now I live in Kentucky, home of the sweet tooth. How do I choose between boozy bourbon balls, sinful red velvet cake (made even better with raspberry jam in between each layer), or the sweet custardy goodness of a butermilk pie? I hope you get better soon. I will be thinking good thoughts. |
| Jun 14, 2007: | Mia (http://www.invisible-jet.net/nosh) Sending you good karma for a speedy recovery. |
| Jun 10, 2007: | Kristen (http://dineanddish.squarespace.com) This is totally my kind of SHF! Can't wait to see all the beautiful creations. |
| Jun 8, 2007: | Danielle (http://habeasbrulee.com/) I'm trying and trying to figure out how to participate, but I have so much trouble choosing a favorite! |
| Jun 8, 2007: | Donna Hmmm the thing I used to crave all of the time was fresh (hot!) and rather underbaked Chocolate Chip cookies. When I was in University I used to bake as a procrastination tool. At my wedding a friend said they could always tell when I had an exam because the kitchen would smell like chocolate. I still get the urge every so often. But my big weakness is Chocolate Cake. Good gooey, cake with lots of of overly sweet icing. In the infamous words of Nigella... pudding heaven. I hope you are feeling better soon. Cheers. |
| Jun 6, 2007: | viji (www.malabarruchi.blogspot.com) Hi, This is the first time i'm visiting ur blog. And ur theme sweets,deserts...mmmmmmmm I love any thing sweet in this world.I dont leave anything which is sweet,u can just imagine.....;-) I will be there for SHF,count on me. |

And thanks for remeber those days |
| Jun 4, 2007: | kate My family used to play this game, we had to name the dish and then put it in context. And so with that in mind here you go;My favourite dessert has to be Indian Pudding with Creme Fraische (at my Father's club and I am home from school on break). Next would be Teuscher Chocolates (in my childhood home at christmas with my family sitting around the table), then my mom's Molasses Cookies (after school, with milk), then Chestnut Souffle (the night before my brother's wedding in Rome). |
| Jun 4, 2007: | Abby (shallwechat.blogspot.com) Oh how I love SHF. This one's right up my alley. Great idea! And here's to hoping you're up and around your beloved kitchen soon! |
| Jun 4, 2007: | Inne (http://chocolat-vanille.blogspot.com/) Hi Jennifer, hope you get better soon and won't have to endure hospital food anymore. My favourite dessert would normally be anything chocolate. Until I discovered passionfruit soufflé that is. Which I've never made myself, so I know what to do for the next SHF. So far, my attempts at soufflé (all 2 of them) turned out to be complete disasters, but I'll have another go. If it fails, I'll just blame it on my oven again, but hopefully the third time will be lucky. |
| Jun 4, 2007: | ButtaBuns (buttabuns.wordpress.com) Eep, I'm getting married that week so I'll have to sit it out. But I'll take any excuse to make vanilla bean cake, so maybe next time. Can't wait to see everybody's entries. Hope you're getting better and back at home soon. Cheers to a quick recovery! |
| Jun 3, 2007: | nicole (http://livinginasecondlanguage.blogspot.com) a fraisier or maybe profiteroles. Yes, profiteroles. With really hot chocolate sauce and really really cold ice cream and some grilled slivered almonds on top. I never make them but I always order them. A fraisier I'll make but never order. |
| Jun 3, 2007: | WillowCaroline (http://willowcaroline.wordpress.com/) Funnily enough, these days my boys and I crave your frozen lemonade cheesecake. We made one last weekend, now that the weather has turned hot here in NC. It was as delicious as we remembered it from the half dozen times we made it last summer. I crave things that are smooth and creamy - bavarian cream filled donuts, chocolate pudding. I also have seasonal cravings - summer heat, frozen lemon cheesecake. Winter weather, hot cocoa with peppermint cream. One other delighful summer craving that your son should be introduced to are the cantelope and watermelon frozen pops from MS several years ago. Puree the cantelope or watermelon, mix with cream and a bit of sugar, wine and maybe some salt - and freeze either as ice cream, or in popsicle molds. So creamy, sweet and good, with an excellent fresh fruit flavor. Too bad I am on a diet. 40 year old bodies do not forgive indulgences easily. |
| Jun 3, 2007: | Eva (http://sweet-sins.blogspot.com) Hi Jennifer, I hope you'll get better soon! Luckily, I have a few days to narrow down the list of my own favourite desserts. Something tells me that this is not gonna be easy...;-) |
| Jun 3, 2007: | missy-j I crave anything with Azuki Bean!! My favourite! |
| Jun 3, 2007: | Whitney I just started purusing through some food blogs and thought I'd start my own. Although I love to bake and will bake anything regardless of whether I want to eat it or not...the dessert I crave is ice cream. Good, thick, rich coffee ice cream. Maybe I should learn to make that? |
| Jun 3, 2007: | cocoa witch all time favorite dessert... it has to be chocolate. Ferrero hazelnut chocolates, Green and Black organic choco bars, choco cream pie, choco cheesecake, choco mousse... sorry i cheated but id definitely eat anything in chocolate form! |
| Jun 3, 2007: | Teresa (http://rainydayfriend.livejournal.com/) Great theme idea! Maybe it's time I learned how to make a creme brulee, as it's my absolute favorite dessert. I order it any time I see it on a menu, and I have several brulee recipes torn out of magazines that I've never attempted. |
| Jun 2, 2007: | Jennifer (http://www.domesticgoddess.ca) It should ideally be a "fresh" post - but if it's your favourite all time dessert why not make it again and write about why you would rather make it than anything else? I sounds absolutely devine! |
| Jun 2, 2007: | ButtaBuns (buttabuns.wordpress.com) A single solitary dessert? That's a tough one, especially after seeing the wonderful pictures that you have. I'm having a hard time deciding which one I'd choose first. Indeed you must have been grinning ear to ear all through that dream! As for the top dessert craving, I would say mine is vanilla cake. Not the plain ho hum kind but the thick, multi-layered, rich buttercream, flecked with vanilla bean type. If I've already made this cake on my blog, does that count or should it be a fresh post? PS I should also apologize to you. I've linked your blog without ever saying hello or leaving a comment. I've been following along ever since your beautiful little boy was born but have never de-lurked. |
